This seems really different from the way IPO's are done in India (atleast a few years back). I believe the general public could send in their requests with the number of shares they are interested in along with a DD. Its a pity that even with such a good trading infrastructure here, general people cannot take part in such high profile IPO's.

RE: How to apply for an IPO

Nirav, in a regular IPO the shares are distributed through the investment banks that are underwriting the deal. Unless you have an account with one of these investment banks, it is very hard to get hold of shares before the company starts trading on an exchange. VMware (VMW) at these levels is a little too richly valued for my blood.

In the case of dutch auction, anyone can bid for shares and Google adopted this approach much to the chagrin of the bulge bracket investment banks. Another company that is going to adopt this approach in the next few months is ERP software provider NetSuite. I plan on posting a blog entry about NetSuite and the dutch auction process soon.

How to apply for an IPO

I am currently interested in the VMware IPO but I am could not find a palce/site where I can apply for it. My ameritrade trade account does not show any 'upcoming IPO' links either. So my questions is, in general how can one apply for an IPO?

Thanks.
